EVERGREEN EVENTS
Evergreen Cemetery Association is dedicated to honoring those who served and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. Please join us at the following annual events:
National Vietnam War Veterans Day – March 29th
National Vietnam War Veterans day is held to thank and honor the approximately 7 million living Vietnam Veterans, along with the 10 million families of those who served during the Vietnam War period. March 29th is a fitting choice for a day honoring Vietnam veterans. It was chosen to be observed in perpetuity as March 29, 1973 was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished and also the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. In addition, on and around this same day Hanoi released the last of its acknowledged prisoners of war.
Evergreen’s memorial service begins at 11 a.m. with guest speakers from state and local government, and representatives from the military service branches. This program is sponsored and coordinated by the Signal Hill Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Village of Barrington Memorial Day Parade and Program – May, Memorial Day
Join Evergreen on this special day of commemoration to honor and reflect on the service of veterans who fell in the line of duty, while also remembering those who are loved and missed from all our families. The Memorial Day parade begins in the Village center at the Veterans Memorial on Cook Street, Park Avenue, and Main Street. The solemn parade routes down Main Street to Dundee Avenue, and concludes on Monument Drive at the Civil War Monument at 11 am, a tradition for over 100 years. This year there will be a special observance of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
National Wreaths Across America Day – December
Evergreen Cemetery Association is privileged to be a Wreaths Across America Day location. Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony which began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992.
Wreaths Across America’s mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 3,900 community cemetery locations, including Evergreen. Local sponsors coordinate volunteers in placing wreaths on millions of Veteran gravesites annually on a specified Saturday in December. Evergreen is honored to have the Signal Hill Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, as our sponsor. The success of this program is due to the support of our sponsor, community organizations that make time and financial commitments, and the citizen volunteers who turn out in support, snow, rain or shine!
Wreaths Across America Day is a Barrington community event that includes a brief memorial service which sets the tone of remembrance and honor. Following the Memorial Service, citizen volunteers of all ages are directed through the cemetery sections by Signal Hill Chapter members who ensure all, over 800, identified Veteran gravesites receive a wreath.
Please help us Remember, Honor, and Teach by sponsoring wreaths and by volunteering this December. Additional information is available at https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/159677/Overview/?relatedId=0
